The V in my name is for Volvo so it shoul d be no surprise that I love the P1800, especially the ES shooting brake version. And as much time as I spent looking at these cars I’ ve never noticed how artfully hidden eh door handles are.
just look at that. its not just hidden in the trim it is the beginning of a body line that flows to the rear fins of the car. and the way the front body line scoops up to it is almost inviting.
. its such a small detail, but man is it cool. Also the all glass hatch is just the bee’s knees.

The simplicity of cars made design details like that so much more impactful.

That’s a neat little feature. I’m really not a big fan of the big plastic grab handles that are ubiquitous on modern cars. Hopefully enough people get jealous of Tesla’s that other manufacturer s branch out a little bit instead of just reaching for the big crude body- colored piece of plastic in their parts bin.

Similar to the Amazon/122 in a way, which was not as hidden, but still more subtle than typical placement:

I’ ve always liked they look. there is a 50's American car that does it too, but I cant think of it. Also the new Conti

I like it. It’s not exactly pretty, but its very cool.

I’m hopeful for that as well. Lincoln did a good job with the new Conti

a good was to summarize the p1800. It’s obviously not b een designed by some one who sculpt s sports cars for a living, but it is interesting for sure.

The Conti is definitely memorable for it.
Period Cadillacs had high mounted subtle door handles:
The 55 Chrysler/Imperial , the car I see as being maybe mildly influential on the overall form of the Amazon, had somewhat high handles too:

New Lincoln Continental d

1800ES is one of my favorite Volvo designs. That detail is right up there with the Continental’s non-moving handles hidden in the beltline trim. •edit•...which you mentioned twice in the comments, lol. Great minds.

Indeed

Well that’s a hell of a lot better than the half-ass job Lincoln did on the Continental.

What ddI you expect actual slender steel door handles? This isn’t 1959

I wish older Volvos hadn’t gotten so dang ex pensive. Even 240s are pretty high now.
By the way when was the last time you had a Volvo Mr. HFV?

I’ve never owned one. Lost of them in my family, Dad’s had 3 including a 76 242 , Sister had a gorgeous 87 740 silver with the blue interior , My brother has had like... 20 maybe more ? including a few 740 Turbos , and an 850R. The first was a manual 240 sedan which saw lo ts of dirt roads . He used to live in M aine where they are still plentiful and cheap , because Maine is like Oregon with no money. he moved to North Carolina and is kind of annoyed about how hard it is to find old Volvos there.
H owever I’ve never had the privilege of owning one. maybe some day.

Something that doesn’t look like cargo tiedowns from a shipping yard would be nice. There’s about a million other ways to integrate door handles into the chrome window trim (an excellent idea in theory) without it being terrible. They chose basically the worst possible way.

No it doesn’t, they look like lifting points on a tank.

Ford Consul Corsair tried a quite similar app roach with its door handles.
If you cannot remember these awesome door handles or can’t even recall what doe s a Corsair look like, here’s an example. It was built by Ford UK but t hey didn’t sell very well.

Your take is wrong, but your
example is right.

That is a very neat looking car. I’d drive it
